The Commissioner of Official Languages (COL) is an agent of Parliament whose mandate is to promote the Official Languages Act and monitor its full implementation. The Office of the Commissioner of Official Languages supports the Commissioner of Official Languages in protecting language rights and promoting English and French in Canadian society.
Regional office staff work with federal institutions and other organizations, the various levels of government and the country’s official language minority communities to help the Commissioner better understand the needs and concerns of the communities, make relevant recommendations and intervene judiciously in important official languages issues.
